Relationships in Astrology
When two people’s horoscopes are compared to one another’s we will see that certain of the planets and points are in mutual aspect – her Mercury might be trine his Pluto or whatever. The study of this interaction is called Synastry. We read in the popular media how ‘Aries and Leo get along but Aries and Virgo do not’. It’s not complete nonsense, but it is borderline irresponsible to teach vulnerable lovers that their love is so doomed and indeed that Astrology is so shallow. Synastry is a profound and rewarding study that requires objectivity and dedication.
Firstly we need to remember that ‘love is a many splendoured thing’. Are we thinking of loving friendship, siblings, parents or sexual partners? Even in the last case, there’s a very wide range of ways to interact. Also your own priorities shift from day to day and year to year and they will invariably differ from your partner’s priorities.
In order to understand what astrology tells us about our relationships, we really need to understand relationship itself rather better than most people seem to do. One major factor is that a healthy relationship requires both harmony and challenge. The honeymoon period doesn’t last long, and pretty soon life throws up difficulties that we have to face together. Typically this is better supported by hard aspects rather than soft; relaxing and having fun tends to be easier with softer aspects, so ideally a good balance of both hard and soft is probably better. In a deep relationship, each partner must help the other to overcome as well as unwind.
Conjunction, Trine, Sextile
Square, Semi-square, Opposition
How long is a piece of string? The closer the orb, the more intense is the interaction but no-one will ever come up with a definitive statement about how wide they should be. As a general rule I like to keep them tight, but the choice is yours as to whether you can actually see or feel the reality of it.
