PLANETS IN SIGNS
In your horoscope there are various planets in their zodiac signs, and any sign will be strongly featured in your personality and scenarios if there is emphasis upon it. Certainly the Sun is one of the emphatic factors - yet so too is the Moon, and also the Ascendant. Also multiple planets in any sign, called a stellium, brings emphasis too. For example a stellium especially with either Ascendant or Moon in the same sign will outweigh the Sun in a different sign in most life situations.

Validation of Astrology
Scientists and other materialists disparage the validity of astrology because it does not conform to their methodology; yet esotericists awaken the part of mind that goes beyond limits of rationality – as of course does love, genius and imagination. The learning process is not especially esoteric at all; it conforms to normal learning practices. We need to apply ourselves to study what others think, then to find new interpretations and understandings and bring our own knowledge into some useful application. We trust that our point of view is valid, even if it contradicts accepted ideas – despite the danger of affirming a foolish understanding simply through lack of skills and insight. We address this point here, by offering a way to track the transit of slower moving planets through the individual degrees and keep a diary of the events and feelings we encounter. I suggest that we include only Saturn – which crosses a few degrees per month – and Uranus, Neptune and Pluto – which typically show in only one or two.
In order for this process to be instructive it is necessary to come to terms with each of the variables:
a) The planets’ core meanings in our lives;
b) The qualities of each stage of a transit;
c) The significance of personal events;
d) The mystery of the Sabian Symbol for each degree.
Stages of a transit
A planet appears to move both forward and backwards, and so typically crosses the same degree three times, although it can be once or five times. Here are the nine stages typical of a transit.
Stage 1 Approach Forewarning
Stage 2 First hit Shock
Stage 3 Moving away Assimilation
Stage 4 Retrograde approach Reminder
Stage 5 Second hit Echo
Stage 6 Going back Revision
Stage 7 Second approach Preparation
Stage 8 Third hit Realization
Stage 9 Moving on Application
MOON IN ARIES
This is the experience of the unconscious side of Aries, the habitual, more needy and childlike aspects of behaviour. Fiery moon positions all tend to be quite self-oriented and with no great inclination to moderate self-expression to take others’ needs into account, so they are less considerate, more impulsive and straightforward in their emotional expression.
Aries Moon is lively, highly independent, wilful, and courageous to the point of recklessness, easily bored and frustrated, often nervous and impatient, decidedly impulsive and spontaneous. They can be irritable and argumentative, very assertive and quarrelsome, seeking confrontation as a way to intensify further their extremely emotional nature. There is a direct, uncomplicated, no-nonsense, honest approach to all life with no attempt to disguise who and what they are. Self-criticism is almost entirely absent, and so no great capacity exists to tune in to others. What is new and inspiring excites their interest and demands their attention, but for a short while only.
MOON IN TAURUS
This is the experience of the unconscious side of Taurus, the habitual, more needy and childlike aspects of behaviour. Earthy Moon positions all tend to be down to earth, practical, very physical, patient even to a fault, and lacking the motivation to change what has become unacceptable.
Taurus Moon is cow-like and would love to live on a farm feeling rooted, domestic, calmly secure, contented, peaceful and in close constant relationship with Mother Earth. This steady, soulful, sensualist needs to be warm, comfortable and safe, seeks pleasure through taste and gentle touch, and provides a protective, nourishing, caring home for themselves and their beloveds. Being quite slow, ponderous, sedentary and suspicious of change, they thrive on a dependable daily routine. They need tangible proof of wealth and can be very possessive materially and emotionally; they can get stuck, becoming stubborn, boorish, hedonistic and gluttonous but are typically goodnatured, faithful and devoted, with a delightful, soft seductive charm.
MOON IN GEMINI
This is the experience of the unconscious side of Gemini, the habitual, more needy and childlike aspects of behaviour. Airy Moon positions all tend to be social and more extroverted, light and charming, independent, emotionally somewhat distant, avoiding confrontation with self and others.
Gemini Moon is sunny, playful and curious, finding everything interesting. Highly intellectual, and often a clever bookworm, they find answers for all questions; the mind is path to their heart. They are carefree, restless spirits, not especially good at sticking to decisions and easily able to shake off bad moods, so emotionally they tend to be cool and superficial, and can be seen as unreliable or even fickle. Healthy scepticism can degenerate into shallow, mocking cynicism as a general way of being and then life becomes an expression of mistrust, and persistent feelings of doubt become crystallised into permanent carelessness and disdain.
MOON IN CANCER
This is the experience of the unconscious side of Cancer, the habitual, more needy and childlike aspects of behaviour. Watery Moon positions all tend to be sensitive, caring, devoted and considerate, and need emotional security so much that they are prepared to exert coercive pressure to get it.
Cancer Moon is warm-hearted, tender, affectionate, careful and shyly hesitant to become emotionally involved because such things matter deeply and have to last. They can be motherly like a broody hen, centred on the closeness of her family, supportive, loving, protective and nourishing to self and children, totally committed to providing a warm nest and cosy comforts. Rather dependent and lacking in self-reliance, they really do need lots of attention and love, and if that is not forthcoming can be very moody, either sulking or dreamy; they often retreat into their romantic, imaginative fantasy worlds. Mood swings are as fast and variable as tides and Moon phases. Any imperfection in loyalty is felt as betrayal, perhaps forgiven but never forgotten.
MOON IN LEO
This is the experience of the unconscious side of Leo, the habitual, more needy and childlike aspects of behaviour. Fiery moon positions all tend to be quite self-oriented and with no great inclination to moderate self-expression to take others’ needs into account, so they are less considerate, more impulsive and straightforward in their emotional expression.
Moon in Leo tends to be carefree, sunny, cheerful, optimistic, generous and high spirited, having a direct, clear manner of expression. Hunger for life shows in a love of luxury and a constant dynamism that carries others along in a slipstream of warmth, excitement and pleasure. Yet they can also be overbearing, jealous and demanding, given to self-overestimation, unable to bear criticism and defeat, needing to be first, special, centre of attention, and always looking for recognition, admiration, praise and encouragement – otherwise there can be exaggerated reactions, prideful showmanship, and impulsive, grand dramatic gestures to put them back in the limelight.
MOON IN VIRGO
This is the experience of the unconscious side of Virgo, the habitual, more needy and childlike aspects of behaviour. Earthy Moon positions all tend to be down to earth, reliable, practical, very physical, patient even to a fault, and yet lacking motivation to change what has become unacceptable.
Virgo Moon is the careful, conscientious perfectionist who is in control and must get things right, so is critically observant in all matters, especially of health and hygiene, fitness, diet, and ecology. They are quick, diligent, competent, skilful, and adaptable. Reserved and rather modest, they thrive in service, being reasonable, helpful and reliably useful in fulfilling assigned tasks. They can get emotionally blocked, ice cold and nitpickingly unaccepting towards the faults of their own or of others, and are well able to manifest the misfortunes they so worry about. A fear of chaos can arise that makes them a stickler for order and security, somewhat anxious, severe and aloof and having the need to organise things and people into pigeonholes.
MOON IN LIBRA
This is the experience of the unconscious side of Libra, the habitual, more needy and childlike aspects of behaviour. Airy Moon positions all tend to be social and more extroverted, light and charming, independent, emotionally somewhat distant, disliking confrontation with self and others.
There is a lightness of being with Moon in Libra. Seeking peace and harmony above all else, they are diplomatic and adaptable so as to avoid discord or conflict; always ready to compromise, nevertheless they assertively mediate fairness. They are mostly friendly, flirtatious and coquettish, elegant, stylish, tasteful and artistic, nice, sweet, charming and carefree. Although partner-oriented they can be very non-committed, an excellent concerned companion whose investment is not so much rooted in depth of emotional connection as in external form expressed in a graceful, cultured, refined manner.
MOON IN SCORPIO
This is the experience of the unconscious side of Scorpio, the habitual, more needy and childlike aspects of behaviour. Watery Moon positions all tend to be sensitive, caring, devoted and considerate, and need emotional security so much that they are prepared to exert coercive pressure to get it.
The Moon in Scorpio is devotional and has a powerful mother image. As a child these people are very dependent, as adults able to create dependency in others by provoking the revelation of subconscious fears, desires and taboos like sex, rage, and penetration, or by being a charming seductress with a mysterious sense of moods and undercurrents, always possessive, wanting intense relationship and holding onto it with ruthless, uncompromising, reckless passion. They can be infamous, devouring, irresistible, bewitching witches whose wishes come true, with unflagging tenacity to conquer and get to the bottom of things; they are often melancholy, unforgiving, jealous, vengeful, and even poisonous when their great sensitivity is wounded.
MOON IN SAGITTARIUS
This is the experience of the unconscious side of Sagittarius, the habitual, more needy and childlike aspects of behaviour. Fiery moon positions all tend to be quite self-oriented and with no great inclination to moderate self-expression to take others’ needs into account, so they are less considerate, more impulsive and straightforward in their emotional expression.
A person whose Moon is in Sagittarius is often jovial, humorous, well-meaning and supportive; the easily motivated, bubbling enthusiast is able to arouse optimism and is inspired towards good and noble high ideals. They tend to feel special and have the urge to be good morally, spiritually or in worldly achievements, longing to be recognised and admired; they dislike disappointing others and find injustice unbearable. They are independent, restless and impulsive, sometimes rather pious and arrogant and, needing a lot of space, they find domestic responsibilities put an impossible strain on their joy.
MOON IN CAPRICORN
This is the experience of the unconscious side of Capricorn, the habitual, more needy and childlike aspects of behaviour. Earthy Moon positions all tend to be down to earth, reliable, practical, very physical, patient even to a fault, and yet lacking motivation to change what has become unacceptable.
The Capricorn Moon person grows up early in life and yet can remain young into a grand old age unless their pessimism and fear of rejection leaves them embittered, closed and distrustful. They create a solid framework of controlled emotion to live in and work in, are typically very self-controlled, conventional, reliable and well-behaved, rarely making demands. Though invariably modest, they need to be needed and seen as valuable so they will take on tasks and energetically seek out responsibility. Absorbing pressure and working conscientiously, even zealously, they can be wilful in their stubbornness to achieve, seeing play as a weakness or indulgence.
MOON IN AQUARIUS
This is the experience of the unconscious side of Aquarius, the habitual, more needy and childlike aspects of behaviour. Airy Moon positions all tend to be social and more extroverted, light and charming, independent, emotionally somewhat distant, disliking confrontation with self and others.
With many friends but attached to no-one, this person does not belong to their family, staying uninvolved, they want to live on higher planes spiritually speaking, and are actually inaccessible to most people, stranger in a strange land. They can be victim of this freedom, living a superficial life, oppressed by closeness and cool, aloof, a loner, more social companion than lover. They dislike being compared to others yet are keen on self-development, being original, creative and self-sufficient. Freedom to be independent and special is their guiding principle, but this can lead to constant restlessness, rebellious fickleness, revocation of agreements and mere experimentation.
MOON IN PISCES
This is the experience of the unconscious side of Pisces, the habitual, more needy and childlike aspects of behaviour. Watery Moon positions all tend to be sensitive, caring, devoted and considerate, and need emotional security so much that they are prepared to exert coercive pressure to get it.
A Pisces Moon person is typically affectionate, protective, gentle, self-sacrificing, sensitive and devoted, longing to merge with another. Having poor boundaries can make for a helpless, anxious martyr, easily seduced and prone to tragic entanglements, yet they are tolerant, patient, ephemeral and forgiving. Their empathy is extraordinary, they sense others wishes and are intimate with transcendental realities, though they do tend to be dreamy, creating a fantasy world to live in, and they can become unfathomable, shy and plagued with guilt from which they constantly seek redemption. They seek an external authority to serve rather than make their claim upon the world self-centred and personal.
MERCURY IN ARIES
The mind is very sharp with Mercury in Aries; and so is the tongue! This person delivers articulate opinions freely, spontaneously and in a confident, firm manner that is honest and straightforward – they say exactly what they think, uncensored. Interactions can be combative, snappy, wilful, frequently judgemental, exaggerated, impatient, sarcastic and mostly subjective. They can be very opinionated and quarrelsome, loving adventurous discussion, looking to score points and win arguments with an excitable, loud narrative style. Capable of instinctive, often rash decisions about what they do or don’t want, their thinking is unambiguously based on a ‘me-first’ policy.
MERCURY IN TAURUS
With a down-to-earth, common-sense intelligence, such people have a tenacious, logical way of thinking things through, thoroughly deliberating questions about what has value and what is worthless before deciding their irrevocable position on matters. Their perception of unproven concepts and new ideas is one of suspicion; thinking is practical, realistic and materialistic, not abstract but tried and true – built on solid foundations. Some might find them slow, simplistic, narrow minded or dogmatic and offer accusations of being inflexible, rigid, immovable, overly conservative, even stubborn. But with a relaxed, easy manner and smooth tone of voice, their earthy, sensual manner of speaking is very reassuring and can be truly entrancing.
MERCURY IN GEMINI
The sharp-minded, articulate, brilliant, humorous and witty intellectual with a nimble talent and exceptional versatility as negotiator or mediator – or the multifaceted, virtuoso of punch lines, puns and irony, whose cleverness in argument and skill at counterattack dazzles the slow-witted – this is the talkative intellectual with a rampant curiosity and passion for discussion and quick deliberation, so can make rash decisions – especially about whether an idea is wise or foolish. Frequently distracted and casually superficial, possibly underhand even phony, this is the position where mind is a dominant force.
MERCURY IN CANCER
Empathy is high and so communication is to do with feelings as much as thoughts, affording suitability for imaginative ideas, imagery and emotional expressiveness. Direct conflict is not enjoyed and there is a tendency to flow along with the mood rather than challenge and require specific information. Great care is taken to consider how the other person will receive a message, whose clarity therefore is somewhat occluded by sentiment, and it may take effort and time to sense what is meant within what is said, especially when there is disagreement. Memory and intuition are strongly highlighted.
MERCURY IN LEO
Having a vivid, graphic, dramatic or even theatrical mode of expression, this is the self-confident, creative organiser who thinks big and leaves the details to others. With the commanding voice of a leader, knows how to be persuasive, motivating, inspiring, and optimistic. But there can be a tendency towards being a little too self-centred which leads to becoming very subjective, sometimes complacently speculative and occasionally showing a superior, overbearing attitude that totally shuns any criticism and therefore lacks true comprehension of the subtleties that others offer.
MERCURY IN VIRGO
Even though they frequently lack the ability to see the big picture, a person with this position can have instinctive awareness of what works efficiently in practice and what is impractical or a waste of effort, and so can decide how best to allocate time and resources with a business-like or scientific manner, which is analytical, methodical, fastidious and precise. Their communication style is sober, clear and concise although this could also become rather categorical and narrow-minded leading to nagging disapproval and, constantly dissatisfied, display anxious self-criticism until everything is perfect. They can display special skills in language, using words in a clever and playful way to promote mindfulness and subtlety of meaning.
MERCURY IN LIBRA
A person with Mercury in Libra is a charming diplomat who can manage to criticise without insult, likes to juggle complex ideas and have elegant strategies of theoretical thought. Their thinking style is friendly and aesthetic, seeking to promote balance and harmony using word play. They are not always especially profound or truth-seeking, and a fear of conflict leads them to somewhat opportunistic accommodation to other people’s views; this can make them appear lightweight and insincere. Problem areas may include unrealistic theorising, a holier-than-thou attitude and hesitant indecisiveness.
MERCURY IN SCORPIO
With this placement a person tends to have the capability of extremely thorough, occasionally obsessive thinking which questions everything to the last detail. Impressively decisive and with absolute, tenacious ambition, they are always curious to get to the bottom of taboos and prohibitions, wanting to reveal mysteries using their sharp, distrusting, sceptical mind, even sniffing around the private life of others. Often enigmatically silent, they can also be pitilessly forthright, using passionate, distressing, even wounding language, which is designed to provoke truthful disclosure; and yet they are sometimes underhanded with malicious intentions. They relish intrigues and enjoy embellished mystification. Developing fixed ideas, their sharp, cynical, pessimistic manner of exposition can easily overpower listeners.
MERCURY IN SAGITTARIUS
Articulate, open-minded and keen to learn, in Sagittarius Mercury has wide interests and a never-ending appetite for further education and religious study, ever seeking the ideal philosophy, the complete explanation of the meaning of life. Their great power to believe and deep self-assurance develops strong convictions, optimism and unusually strong faith; thus the power to convince others. Yet it can also make a person arrogant, gullible, superficial, uncritical, complacent, dogmatic and condescending – a conceited, hypocritical, sermonising moralist, an epic missionary ‘know it all’.
MERCURY IN CAPRICORN
This is the serious, logical thinker, precise and strictly realistic, sharp, incorruptible and without delusion, one who, even with complex thought processes, has the perseverance and concentration to keep in mind what is essential. The style of communicating and thinking is persistent, methodical, unimaginative, even monosyllabic with a cold, hard, ‘no nonsense’ approach that can be seen as narrow minded, extremely dry and inflexible. They tend towards pessimism, would rather say No than Yes and keep to well-travelled paths of normal thinking.
MERCURY IN AQUARIUS
With remarkably pronounced intuition and frequent flashes of brilliance, in Aquarius Mercury shows itself as very inventive, a truly creative thinker bursting with ideas. There is a prominent thirst for knowledge, a tolerant, liberal, humanitarian attitude and a perpetual open mindedness that supports an excellent capacity for objective, abstract thinking with the ability intellectually to synthesise a range of ideas, especially anything progressive, new or original. The danger lies in being overly intellectual, erratic, easily distracted, lost in abstraction and rather arrogant about one’s intelligence.
MERCURY IN PISCES
Mercury is very airy by nature and Pisces is extremely watery, so we have the bubbly thinker, one who is more comfortable expressing ideas through art, music, colours and images – by suggestion as much as definite words; they like to feel the meaning within things rather than try to understand them through analysis. Intuition, empathy and telepathy are extraordinarily strong and there is a good sense of patterns, correlations and the meaning hidden within the relationship between things. Yet the lively mind can become very quirky, lost in illusion, flooded with fantasy, uncritical, self-deceiving and dishonest, and then such people are very easily influenced, over-sensitive and will find it difficult to articulate clearly what they mean and how they feel.
VENUS IN ARIES
Attraction is expressed impulsively with a strong, direct disclosure of self, including clear, spontaneous statements of wants and needs, which can often appear more demanding than giving. Subtlety and sensitively are sometimes put aside in favour of straightforwardness and immediacy of a fiery passion that burns very brightly but for a short time only. More likely to initiate than be seduced, and often perfectly content to be alone, this is the image of independence and emotional self-sufficiency.
VENUS IN TAURUS
Seeks and finds contentment through full-on sensuality and unabashed eroticism, taking great pleasure in physicality and its earthy delights. A softness and devotion in love is matched by great strength and reliability as a partner, yet possessed of passionate jealously if allowed to feel insecure. A Thomas Hardy image of a rosy-cheeked, buxom wench with a naughty smile and a pint a cider fits rather well! This is the solid, slow, long-term lover with old-fashioned ideas about what a woman should be like to please her man and what she requires in return.
VENUS IN GEMINI
Entertaining sociability, lightness and humour replace profound feelings of the heart, which are considered of lesser consequence than fluidity of communication, mental stimulation and intellectual resonance. The lover is the best friend, and intense displays of emotion are less favoured than finding new and interesting ways to have fun together; romantic gestures are often more charming than touching. Yet there is often an exceptional willingness and ability and to see things from the partner’s point of view, and a sincere enthusiasm to change oneself to accommodate the preferences of the other.
VENUS IN CANCER
Longs to belong. The irrepressible need for nesting sets the emotional antennae in the direction of a suitable mate for making a family, and creates a willingness to offer devotion in return for a nest. Dreamy, romantic, soft and tender, this highly impressionable cuddly kitten can be rather indiscriminate and too easily persuaded to trust, which leads to the risk of repeated disillusionment and consequential sadness. Then the danger is that she feels constantly threatened, grows a hard shell of cynicism and maintains a poignant and self-fulfilling expectation of disappointment. She must learn not to give away too much too soon.
VENUS IN LEO
With this in your horoscope, you are likely to be very warm-hearted, generous and demonstrative, having no inhibitions against erotic adventures in relationship or creative personal expression in friendship. This is the lioness or playgirl who likes to treat love as a wonderful childlike game filled with drama – a way to bring to life a favourite movie star or fictional character. She is proud of her partner who must absolutely be proud of her – and show this by treating her like a queen and offering frequent extravagant gestures of appreciation, especially things to make her beauty and importance more noticeable.
VENUS IN VIRGO
This placement inclines a person to seek perfection as a partner and in a partner, so there is a real need to guard against becoming overly critical and self-critical. There is an inherent modesty of being, an understanding that beautiful things and beautiful people are rare and to be recognised as very special since they may come only once in a lifetime. Love tends to be expressed in practical terms that support health and efficiency and there can be an intuitive knowledge of natural healing methods. However, wherever discipline is absent self-abusive indulgences and promiscuity can be experienced as shadow aspects.
VENUS IN LIBRA
Harmony, grace, elegance and good manners are essential qualities in this classical, cultivated beauty whose charm is invested in the superficial allure of cool detachment. Passionate emotionality is rarely if ever allowed full expression since the aspiration is to be a perfect example – a doll or an angel. The commitment to be absolutely fair is unrivalled, as is the willingness and ability to see things from the other’s point of view. This is based on a deep understanding of how to establish a truly equal partnership and so achieve a state of mutuality as a workable philosophy of sustainable, peaceful interaction.
VENUS IN SCORPIO
Scorpio is the darkest region in the psyche, and Venus brings relationship into that place – of taboos, power-plays, domination and submission, temptation and sin, the thrill of breaking codes of normality and even decency. This brings raw turbulence of emotion, passion, suffering and such entanglements as sexual addiction and the violence of emotional manipulation that arises out of constant pulsations between extreme licence and frozen denial. All involvements are unforgettable, transformative and highly intense affairs that demand profound authenticity and commitment.
VENUS IN SAGITTARIUS
There is a real dedication to learning about life through the experience of relationship and so an attraction to those aspects of an active shared life which are adventurous and exotic, also spiritual and philosophical. With honesty and directness guaranteed intentions are entirely honourable, yet the urge to be free is so strong that passions can be very ephemeral – they are quick to develop loving feelings and then rather inconsistent in expressing them. This is someone uninhibited, always single at heart, so rather unreliable as an emotional support – one who needs and offers a lot of space for both partners to explore life independently as much as together.
VENUS IN CAPRICORN
For such types, relationship is a serious business, offering both emotional and financial security and having the committed ability to endure through long-lasting hardship if necessary, seeing it through to the bitter end or until death do us part. If it comes at all it comes slowly and cautiously, but love is by no means a requirement, and sex can be as rampant as a goat or as austere as a monk. Able to tolerate whatever coldness that arises out of inhibited expression of feelings, austerity or significant differences in age, this is Venus in its driest expression wherein steadfastness is raised in importance above cheerfulness.
VENUS IN AQUARIUS
Possibly better as an interesting companion and friend than a passionate involved lover, this is a rather detached, even cold, aloof partner whose emotional freedom will never be surrendered at any cost. They study the unconventional and bizarre aspects of human experience, always experimenting with new ideas and attracted towards new people. Generally speaking, humanity is loved more than humans, and so passion is awakened by causes and visions of a better future rather than the love of any special person.
VENUS IN PISCES
This is an image of the dreamy devotee seeking to experience perfect compassion, yearning to serve their lover with unbounded selflessness as if as a religious ideal. There is great tenderness and affectionate sensitivity, yet there can easily be extreme, sentimental romanticism – a fairy-story love which is ultimately unsustainable – so it goes hand in glove with the strong risk of disillusionment. Also there is a likelihood of becoming victim to the projections of needy types wherein unrealistic expectations arise, together with a shared seduction towards sweet surrender into the illusion of spiritual bliss.
MARS IN ARIES
Mars’s essence is best expressed in Aries, where it demonstrates its fiery power with immediacy and little if any inhibition. This is the belligerent fighter, the courageous hero, the enterprising pioneer and the ardent lover, a hot-blooded conqueror ramming his wilful way along a direct path to a clear, self-chosen goal. Impatient and excitable, he is black and white of opinion and action – never nuanced – and has little stamina, not a distance runner but a sprinter whose place is to be the first to start things off, first into the fray and first to get restless, wanting to find something new and challenging.
MARS IN TAURUS
This is the staunch, strong and diligent defender and protector, whose stubbornness is unrivalled and whose commitment to stand firm is as solid as a rock; like a steamroller, he is extraordinarily reluctant to get going yet in motion is all but unstoppable with impressive thrust and stamina. Similarly, as a lover the sensual bull needs time to warm up and can then become a compelling, sexual powerhouse – with a delightful gentle touch and natural, earthy easiness. Yet be warned! Do not tease him with false promises; there is a real danger of phenomenal, blind rage that erupts – rarely, but without warning or containment.
MARS IN GEMINI
Brightly charming, a disarmingly pertinent entertainer, simultaneously he is the adolescent rogue, cynical and sarcastic, a windbag full of ideas yet with no resilience to fulfil duties or promises. Banter is fun, an intimate battle of wits, and he is the picker of and winner of arguments; with a hailstorm of verbal aggression, this sharp-tongued multitasker confuses and flatters with the rapid agility of a fencer and the tactical skill of a chess master. Yet his clever articulations are often completely off the point, and his flights into convoluted intellectual realms can be as confusing to himself as others.
MARS IN CANCER
In matters of the heart the imaginative, dreamy poet is gentle, careful, caring and rather slow – yet eventually becoming quite devoted. Heightened sensitivity can make emotional safety difficult to find, so feelings of being uncared for or insulted occur and, being unable to express dissatisfaction or anger, an agitated, sulky, passive-aggressive attitude can arise, which leads to accusations and the petulant wish that others might feel guilty – or at least share the pain. Ambitions are usually subtle and hidden and realised only indirectly – since mood swings create frequent vacillations of purpose and meandering detours.
MARS IN LEO
Brimming with confidence and optimism, everything is done in a truly spirited way, expressing a lust for life that has no equal. Although usually there is noteworthy dignity rather than prideful egotism, this can be a dramatic even theatrical performer, grand and imperious with disdainful arrogance – a domineering stag that brooks no criticism and is temporarily irritated at anyone who examines or challenges. In relationship, he expects his partner to be proud of him offering due recognition, loyalty and enthusiastic support in return for his dependable, loving warmth and noble, refined way of being.
MARS IN VIRGO
Preferring routine to spontaneity, in Virgo Mars gets things done efficiently in a careful, practical manner that avoids wastage or error – just like a taxman it is precise, methodical, economical and diligent, knowing that industriousness and pedantic obedience to formulaic strategy lead to successful resolution. Always controlled it can be seen as rather prudish – more clean and tidy than rough and ready – even in matters of intimate concern. Domestic battles are best won with careful preparation, attention to facts and figures and unending sharp persistent criticism that wears down opponents over time – the nag.
MARS IN LIBRA
Libra has exceptional awareness and sensitivity to the other and the other’s position, seeking to avoid conflict and find equitable balance so, even with Mars there, naked aggression is not to be seen. What works is the clever strategy of a chess player and anticipation of the opponent’s next move; this is the diplomat, the fencer, and the seeker of compromise. There can be indecision and ambivalence, but when engagement finally does occur then unrivalled determination can be expected. In love, he is refined, cultivated and charming, rarely if ever given to passion and, if thwarted, capable of icy, heartless rejection.
MARS IN SCORPIO
For good or evil, beyond taboos and rationality, in Scorpio Mars resonates uncanny emotional intelligence with such passionate intensity that nothing can resist its single-pointed intention. Formidable ambition focused on a very well-defined goal brings an extreme obsession that can be as self-destructive as it can be threatening to enemies; it enjoys creating addictions or simply swallowing its prey whole. Hidden spiritual power brings a dark, fascinating, mysterious charisma like a dangerous, venomous snake; whether as surgeon, as hunter or as highly sexual lover, it is tough and effective, and can be ruthless and unforgiving.
MARS IN SAGITTARIUS
With infectious enthusiasm, in Sagittarius Mars crusades towards the goal of reaching and holding the moral high ground based on noble principles of wisdom, truth and, above all, justice. He is knowledgeable and cultivated, equally comfortable as the military commander as much as the missionary, the worldly and spiritual traveller with plenty – sometimes more than enough – self-confidence. Matters of the heart and bedroom are often held sacred yet he can blow hot and cold very quickly and in a whim can change from feeling fascinated and impassioned to being restless and bored.
MARS IN CAPRICORN
When the going gets tough, the tough get going. Sometimes grumpy and hard, this is the champion of endurance tests, the uncompromising goat – patient, reliable, disciplined and faithful, whose strength grows as it is challenged. In and out of the bedroom, after careful thought and with extraordinary stamina, its actions are decisive, irreversible and intractable. Quite capable of cold, merciless anger, this is the most formidable long-term opponent, employing a mixture of Machiavellian strategy, commonsense and resilient doggedness to achieve its purpose no matter what resistance in encountered.
MARS IN AQUARIUS
The urge to discover new ways to overcome old problems is backed by a single-minded willfulness that disdains nay-sayers. The strength of an Aquarius Mars lies in the pioneering mind, which creates abstract, theoretical and often eccentric ways to achieve its goals, without always being able or even interested in bringing ideas into reality. He can be uncompromising, ice cold and highly unpredictable, happier as a lone wolf and without much commitment to make the concessions needed for loving relationship, even forcing his opinions on others with the certainty of a zealot.
MARS IN PISCES
Mars’s direct and coercing essence is somewhat confounded in this very mutable, watery position as military qualities strain to project force with sensitivity and compassion. This is exemplified by the holy warrior – samurai, shaolin monk and Templar crusader – who fights for peace using powerful spiritual forces to cultivate an inexplicable, intuitive accuracy of aim, sometimes even yielding in order to win. This dreamer is easily seduced by mood swings, and since instinct is more often employed than reason to determine action, it can also easily misfire and miss the point entirely. Emotional blackmail is one of their darker tools, together with the use of chaos and confusion, mystery and seductive charm knowingly employed in order to gain advantage.
JUPITER IN ARIES
In Aries, Jupiter makes a strong claim upon the world, demanding recognition and reward with an absolute sense of worthiness. This is the courageous hero, the advocate of faith, the natural leader immodestly pioneering the substantial and transcendent realms without much willingness to negotiate and compromise. The qualities of self-assertiveness and personal freedom are highly valued principles, championed as life causes for both self and others. Strengthening of one’s conviction in the spiritual aspect of existence is more likely to develop according to direct mystical experience rather than imparted belief, and the path to happiness and success is also carved out personally not by following any well-trod, signposted track.
JUPITER IN TAURUS
Taurus’s propensity for excess is emphasised by Jupiter, which raises material profusion and sensuality to the level of religious ideal. More profoundly aware of the Earth’s spiritual gift of abundance than any other, they find contentment with simple pleasures and naturally gravitate into close proximity to living things, especially if they are green. In fact, sacred pagan images of the Green Man and May Queen resonate well, and earthy occupations like gardener and farmer are suggested. However, there is a risk of extravagance and conceitedly flaunting one’s superior wealth – also cleverly rebranding self-indulgence as Epicurism in order to pretend that what is in fact gluttony might be viewed as sacred appreciation.
JUPITER IN GEMINI
In Gemini Jupiter’s urge to explore registers as the unbiased philosopher considering all ideas as being simultaneously true and false. Whether sceptic or cynic the High Priest of Doubt is commentator upon belief rather than a believer and takes contradiction to the level of an art. Uninvited he sets out to destroy the illusion of false faith he so readily observes in the opinions of others. With no values of his own, he can be superficial and judgemental, yet questioning everything, is enemy of gullibility, the master of common sense.
JUPITER IN CANCER
The softer, more feminine Christian virtues are exemplified by Jupiter in Cancer – whose core principle is kindness and forbearance. The image is of Mary, Kwan Yin, or the Great Mother who compassionately protects the weak, offers empathy, sympathy and loving indulgence, is dependably helpful and ever-forgiving. Also she promotes tribal values by being rooted in the home and is dedicated first and foremost to serve family needs. However, such unjudgmental forgiveness lacks discrimination in its ethical compass, especially when self-applied, so there is a real risk of moral indifference and irresponsible lack of accountability and discipline.
JUPITER IN LEO
The benevolent patron is full of goodwill towards everybody, indulgently supporting and promoting all and sundry and dispensing largesse with a sincere smile and a sympathetic word. There is luxury, golden opulence and magnificence, punctuated by frequent grand gestures – yet this can be more for show than as a deeply-felt involvement in others’ aspirations. There can be issues with feelings of superiority, and a corresponding superficiality that goes with that empty condition; problems are too often denied and avoided, and criticism is ignored or refuted without due consideration. Kindness, optimism and sparkling good-natured warmth are guaranteed however.
JUPITER IN VIRGO
With this placement of Jupiter one values order and reliability; above all else what matters is the clear understanding that the world is exactly the way it appears and, even after nit-picking critical analysis, all is found to be the way it purports to be. When exaggerated, this quality would be caricaturised in an envious, fault-finding nag, a bitter, misanthropic know-it-all stubbornly but ineffectually on a mission to reform the world of its imperfections one person at a time. Yet in a mature, well-adjusted person it shows as self-aware, practical modesty and truly humble altruism – the perfection of service.
JUPITER IN LIBRA
Libra’s moderating influence can be rather paradoxical for Jupiter since it tends towards extremism more than balance. Here, it values Justice and Harmony above all else. However, the very process of confronting what is unfair inevitably creates tension and the risk of disharmony. This dilemma can make for a non-committal, indecisive attitude – and so there can be absence of thrust and consequential lack of power to make good on claims. Conflict and disenchantment are avoided by identifying the principles of Fairness, Equality and Balance as philosophy instead of gritty life practices, and looking for Beauty in art instead of passionate, committed relationship.
JUPITER IN SCORPIO
Scorpio’s effect upon Jupiter is to enable a depth exploration of what is hidden, in particular the workings of the unconscious mind – and therefore emotional processes. All that is concealed or enigmatic is studied and mastered, and this gives an unusual capacity to influence others especially through charm, sexuality and other forms of charismatic suggestion. The resultant powers are shamanic in nature and revealed by those who practise methods of intentional transformation such as magick, psychology and subtle healing techniques. When they are misused it leads to being irresponsible and inconsiderate towards others, in excess there can be even dominance, manipulation, mental cruelty and enslavement.
JUPITER IN SAGITTARIUS
The best and worst of emperors can be seen when Jupiter in in Sagittarius. We see the moralistic, pompous, opinionated know-it-all guru type lording it over every one of the lesser beings to whom he explains how to behave, what to believe and why. But we also see the truly dignified elder whose strong faith gives genuine protection, whose optimism inspires others, who carefully examines religion, pursues knowledge and attains wisdom, and who lives a virtuous, principled life demonstrating nobility of spirit ever defending justice and seeking further and deeper for the truth.
JUPITER IN CAPRICORN
What is valued when Jupiter is in Capricorn is the order that binds a community so society can function as an integrated unit. Such people are often trusted with highly responsible positions of hierarchical authority since their inner discipline makes them conservative, dutiful and especially reliable. Serious and obedient to traditional customs and accepted moral codes, they play by the rules and approve of defined limits, straightforwardness and sincerity. Taken to the extremes this can create a morally pedantic attitude, glorifying normality, constraining the flow of life and strangling spontaneity – then, like Scrooge, one can find perverse delight in austerity and greyness.
JUPITER IN AQUARIUS
Aquarius speaks to humanity’s aspirations and utopian ideals in terms of the supremacy of Mind as it grapples with the challenges of physical reality and human psychology. Here Jupiter becomes a champion of human rights, a progressive thinker, a revolutionary glorifying individual freedom, universal suffrage, communal wellbeing and open borders. Yet this highly rational search for enlightenment inclines towards demystifying what is in fact essentially mysterious; the detachment of this solitary thinker can close down the deeper intuitive side of wisdom that opens us up to the Great Mystery. There is the risk of missing the point and forgetting to smell the roses.
JUPITER IN PISCES
Jupiter’s expansiveness works well very in unbounded Pisces, and creates a sense of oneness with all living beings. Such people are natural healers and teachers, exemplars of empathy and compassion who self-sacrificingly offer comfort and hope to anyone in need – turning the art of ‘tea and sympathy’ into a spiritual practice, often backing this up with practical help. There is a risk of gullibility and being taken advantage of, and an uncomfortable wavering between the two extremes of life. To be lost in the glamour of false, sentimental teachings is easily as likely as touching in to cosmic consciousness and the glory of redemptive sacredness.
SATURN IN ARIES
Such people, although morally disdainful towards aggression and egotism, paradoxically tend to focus to an unusual degree upon self-assertiveness. During childhood and as young adults this can be a difficult challenge, yet in their 30s a self-confident inner strength is more noticeable and a dynamic personality emerges which takes the initiative and demands respect. However, under pressure the risk is that this is exaggerated into cruel or violent, merciless behaviour and a rigidity of character that shows in the complete absence of spontaneity, a fear of defeat and, in consequence, a compulsive, controlling attitude with the potential for bullying.
SATURN IN TAURUS
Before the age of 29, there can be a disapproving attitude towards any lack of application seen in others, and some contempt towards those who pursue the enjoyment of pleasure for its own sake. Maturity brings greater balance, an awareness of the reality of life, and a more reasonable acceptance sense of people’s imperfections. Compulsive striving for watertight security against hardship, the loss of sanctuary, or the risk of ruin is then replaced by the balanced ability to enjoy a relaxed way of being, a modest satisfaction with simple sensuality, a clear sense of self-worth and the end of one’s irrational fear of commitment.
SATURN IN GEMINI
For young people of this type, the avoidance of intellectual curiosity and impartial enquiry can lead to cynicism and loss of independent thought; these must be overcome if their remarkable cleverness is to be elevated to the level of wisdom. A fear of appearing stupid or being lost for words can crystallise into the habit of kneejerk sarcasm or clichéd and often self-contradictory opinions. Yet in maturity this is the deep one whose thinking mind is of consequence, being capable of real concentration and serious philosophical versatility, always offering sensitive consideration to the other point of view, and entirely able to understand and appreciate opposing arguments.
SATURN IN CANCER
Can scorn domestic rootedness and the mothering instinct, being nervous about starting a family before feeling ready. They shy away from expectations of the care that families imply, reluctant to be at the mercy of sentimentality and emotional attachments – especially heavy, troublesome moods. A postponed development of emotional intelligence and fear of being ‘eaten up’ by the feminine can be compensated for by exhibitionism rather than the true expression of deeper feelings. In later years the challenge is to develop wise, empathic maturity, taking emotions seriously without suppression or dependency and, through composed self-control, find inner peace.
SATURN IN LEO
Characterised by a fear of being unloved and insignificant, the lifelong journey is away from a stern reluctance to accept recognition, respect and admiration towards modest, dignified, mature confidence, self-criticism and a humble willingness to accept high level responsibility. Taking centre stage in any gesture of pomp or showmanship is usually rejected, luxury is generally disdained and the opportunity to make every day wonderful and exciting can actually be felt as an oppressive duty, a compulsion to be constantly generous and magnificent. In time, one comes to enjoy life’s finer things and develop superior style exemplified by free expression of personal uniqueness.
SATURN IN VIRGO
List-maker extraordinaire, here is the organiser, a lover of proficiency and good order, who underwrites exceptional economy, social responsibility and efficient management. Pedantic rechecking of detail ensures that no criticism can ever be levelled at them. Exaggerated perfectionism includes fanatical fault-finding and obtrusive criticism towards others, yet is also self-directed - afraid of being useless, awkward, inappropriate or maladjusted. Illness is seen as weakness so an unusual degree of self-control generally promotes stable health. During youth however, they can be slapdash and sloppy, very inflexible, extremely under-confident and loathing of domesticity.
SATURN IN LIBRA
Earlier in life there can be felt a fervent, compelling need to socialise, and dutifully force oneself to engage in serious relationship; this doesn’t really sit well with other inclinations – to wait and carefully weigh up the options and ramifications of involvements. Later in life one is more able to form a serious, mature, committed relationship that includes some degree of inter-dependency and real consideration for one’s partner. Initial immature unwillingness to compromise, and reluctance to express oneself artistically through beauty and playful creativity, develops eventually into unusual grace and also responsibility, great discernment and a profound feeling for fairness.
SATURN IN SCORPIO
In maturity, pacifying a childhood fear of helpless dependency, one learns to trust. Dealing with entrenched emotional issues allows deep-rooted life satisfaction in dark and forbidden taboo areas, and from this honesty there arises the ability to influence others intensely. Entanglements and destructive forces are addressed head-on so that devoted partnership, sexual ecstasy, enjoyment of power, awareness of death’s mysteries and occult knowledge can occur. Emotional commitment is key and it is a challenge to overcome, often with an undeniable, dogged force of will, an early reluctance to express passion and reach a considered position of accepted commitment to another.
SATURN IN SAGITTARIUS
A strong inclination exists to take on both the outer and inner planes the journey to discover truth and knowledge seriously, which eventually leads to tolerance and wisdom, an accurate sense of self and the deeper secrets of esoteric reality. Yet within there is always a counter-voice that is sceptical and disdains religious faith, the search for life’s meaning and moral values. This imperfection of faith needs to be overcome or the personality may crystallise into a rigid, moralistic, dogmatic, prudish self-righteousness with xenophobic, atheistic tendencies that create an expectation that one’s life is to be rather absurd and hopeless, and adventures lacking in purpose or joy.
SATURN IN CAPRICORN
Saturn works well here. Throughout life one works steadily towards the development of an impressive, clear and reliable sense of truth and responsibility – “these are the facts, they require this response, and it is my willing duty to attend to things properly”. In youth the opposite position is experienced – fear of being controlled fosters rigidity and creates strictness, reluctance to toe the line, minimal application and little ambition – yet with gritty determination ultimately great maturity can arise. The trick is to replace self-enslaving repression with a healthy self-discipline that builds prudent career planning, matured authority, sober clarity and a pragmatic world view.
SATURN IN AQUARIUS
As co-ruler, Saturn brings Aquarius’s peculiarities into line and so creates workable visions instead of just bizarre fantasies. This can be the inventor of truly useful utopian stuff, practical innovation arising from relaxed freedom of thought and a sober attitude towards progressive experimentation. There is often a lifetime journey to reach this mature state – of being at the leading edge of advanced thinking. In youth one sees a stubborn insistence of needing special treatment, doing crazy things so not to be thought inferior, an obsession with reform for its own sake – but this extravagance of individuality can create the deserted outsider’s loneliness of not belonging.
SATURN IN PISCES
Finding a balanced approach to the matter of spirituality is a lifelong task, which includes exceptional caution and scepticism, and a reluctance in youth to trust intuitive knowledge of the subtle realms of being. This evolves firstly into an almost obsessive overstatement of selflessness and devotion, and in extreme cases there can be slavish self-sacrifice possibly arising out of a deep feeling of guilt – or an overblown, crazy mysticism or mediumship, losing oneself in inexplicable extremes of transcendence and leading to chaotic life circumstances. Yet this evens out into true kindness, willingness to forgive and pardon, deep sensitivity, selfless mature love and trust in the higher self.
If the North Node is Aries, the South Node is necessarily Libra, the Nodes are each end of an axis.
Aries - Libra
Taurus - Scorpio
Gemini - Sagittarius
Cancer - Capricorn
Leo - Aquarius
Virgo - Pisces
The general text can be studied for both ends, so an Aries North Node person will identify with both Aries and Libra qualities to some extent. What matters is the context in which these qualities become dominant.
Context of the Nodes
We can use the idea of the soul's journey through life as if it comes into incarnation already blessed with skills and attitudes associated with the South Node. This is what is found easy, and upon which we come to depend and perhaps habituate towards when dealing with major life issues. The North Node is challenging; this is where our best work is done in soul evolution, but only if we take on the challenges of relearning so that we undo the habituation of South Node methods and struggle to balance them with North Node spiritual aspirations.
In youth we tend to celebrate and depend upon South Node qualities, and it is rare to find a person under 40 years old whose North Node is showing clearly. As the years pass, interest in South Node activities dwindles and North Node realisations shape the personality much more. An older person will always have the profound resources of the South Node available and yet will additionally have the North Nodes's hard-won skills and wisdoms to call on.
The general text for each zodiac sign can be read for the Ascendant position...so an Aries Ascendant person is very strongly Aries-like and so on.
What matters is to try to feel and understand the difference between having your Sun in a particular sign and your Ascendant in that sign.
The Ascendant is first, but it is not shallow. It tends to be what you present to any situation immediately...that is, without mediation. There is more spontaneity, less personal reflection, more habitual knee-jerk responsiveness than the Sun. Also, if people don't look carefully into who you are, then they are probably more likely to see Ascendant than Sun.
The Sun is central and essential, so it is not quick to show all of its power - simply because it is the last word on the matter. Not everyone can claim the authentic expression of who they, they are shaped by external forces and lack self-projection; these people are unlikely to be good examples of their Sun sign, but they will have no choice than to show the Ascendant.
A Useful Metaphor
Imagine a light is shining through a coloured glass. If you are inside the glass the whole world seems to be that colour too; if you are outside looking in you will be fooled into thinking the light itself is the colour of the glass. The glass is Ascendant, the light is the Sun. As you grow in experience and wisdom, you learn to adjust your perceptions and presentation by taking into account the effect of the coloured glass....and yet most people don't actually get to be very good at this technique, and so they can't really determine which is which. I would say that following your Ascendant path will bring you pleasure and success, whilst following your Sun path will lead towards joy and contentment.
