Generally in the West people hold a negative attitude to death as though it were to be avoided at all costs. Dying therefore is mostly seen as a sad process punctuated by loss and failure. Sufis teach differently. In fact perhaps one of the greatest rewards for the student of mysticism is an explanation of what occurs after we exhale for the very last time.

In Sufism, this last embodied moment can be rehearsed in the practice known as ‘die before you die’. This teaches ultimate freedom as we die to everything we have ever been attached to.

Speaking with the Soul's Voice

Notwithstanding the importance of having clear boundaries and embracing each one of the 7 Words fully, when we say Yes to life, the deepest mystery is awakened within us. This goes hand in hand with deciding to live out of faith, trusting that we will always be able to find whatever we need to deal with whatever life throws up - and indeed feeling certainty that the future is always better than the past. Now, we have found how to notice and read subtle clues all around us that guide our next step.

This ability that we learn - to access the state of Yes, also allows us to surrender to the highest, inspired aspect of ourselves. In such a state we become able to speak with the soul's voice.

The 7th mystery is to access this high state so that we are simply the receptacle through which the soul enacts its way of being on Earth. Then we present affirmations in the form of statements  beginning with the words "I am..." This is high magick, incomparably potent.

Do you usually wake up feeling enthusiastic?
Typically a child is actively involved in the experience of joyful curiosity within the very first moments of waking. That’s the natural state, free of fear. In contrast, so many adults are resentful at having to get up and go to work. Each awakening is troubled immediately with anxiety or a depressed mood. Those first feelings are eloquent testimony to the expectations we have for the day ahead and so let us know whether we have a relaxed acceptance that whatever comes will be fine.

Do you ‘take life as it comes’ with easy acceptance?
As time goes by, more and more we come to see that we somehow survive even worst-case scenarios. Our expectations often go unfulfilled, and instead our fears are realised, yet still we manage to pull through. It’s true that occasionally we often get almost exactly what we want, yet truer that actually we get something else, and truer still that the something else actually becomes the better option.  So why not relax then?  Why resist what can’t be changed?

Are you using your talents well?
It is surely obvious that we all have amazing talent? All that we need to do is to trust our ability, and then we find ourselves to be supremely resourceful and capable of unthinkable achievements. Nothing is to be gained by believing in our limitation – except limitation itself. By surrendering to the highest within us we allow a greater life-force to operate through us, which expresses itself in the form of knowledge and talents. These need to be used in order to claim them, and therefore our full magnificent birth right to be wonderful people
Linguistically, per-mission means a through-flowing – yet in normal use it now carries the restrictive implication that we could say No, and indeed we prefer to say No, but reluctantly we are saying Yes instead. 
Agreement is reached when two parties that disagreed find alignment with a common approach. Here the soul and the ego strongly disagree about what is best – and that needs to change. This last chapter of life could be the most profound and joyful, the best one, but we have to get the ego on board or it might not be. The ego has no capacity to change the final outcome, but it can really spoil this last journey.
Acceptance is the procedure by which we come to own what is presented to us. It seals a relationship between giver and receiver. In this particular scenario, we are being offered safe passage from this world to the next by the ‘Angel of Death’. We have no say in whether to die, but most definitely we have the last word in how to do it, well or badly. Acceptance is what opens up the possibility of dying well.
At the very moment that we gasped our first breath it became certain that we would one day sigh our last. We have been approaching death all our lives with no possibility of reprieve. Powerless in the inevitability, we have no choice about it and like everyone else, princess or pauper, must surrender in the end. Yet we do have a choice about how to surrender. We can raise a white flag, lower our heads and feel defeated, or we can offer ourselves willingly as if to a lover. Surrender can be bitter or sweet, to an enemy or to our Beloved, and it really does matter which approach we take.
