1.3 Honour
Honour is a quality describing a person whose behaviour is consistently in alignment with a code of principles, which can be personal or communally-agreed. Often an honourable person is described as principled, ethical, decent, respectable, moral and honest, and they are known to keep their word, be reliable and of good faith. They take these aspects of personality to be important enough to discipline themselves thoroughly, and thus they win the respect and love of their circle through their nobility of character. In a very tangible way, honour represents a form of social contract between the community and the individual, and frequently defines that which is held to be legal, morally acceptable, and even sacred. In fact, when our actions align with our soul’s desire, then we feel a sense of freedom – we know and feel our soul’s perspective. Failure to attend to such community matters brings censure and often penalty, strongly laced with shame, embarrassment or guilt. Also, whenever thwarted, we can easily get frustrated, chastise ourselves and resent others. Until we learn how to contain and channel such frustration, it may well build into a destructive, yet ineffectual, force. A person of honour will always try to do the right thing, no matter the cost, and measure as successful a life lived by always showing profound respect for every living being. When we recognise how sacred all our relationships are, then our choices and behaviour become more honourable; more in alignment with what is agreed as acceptable. An honourable person walks a path through life conscious of higher principles. Such a path shows in their noble bearing as grace and beauty, and this atmosphere can be likened to a robe of light; it is the true meaning of aristocracy. |
