Of those who sincerely seek to gain a better grasp of reality, some are committed to a purely rational approach, for example scientists. Others, for example flat-earthers and readers of tea leaves, tend to trust their intuitive, non-rational methods. Those of us who study Sabian Symbols need to employ both rational and intuitive sides, the left brain and the right brain, to really gain the fullest messages available from these often bizarre images.
Assuredly Marc Edmund Jones did, as did his friend Dane Rudhyar whose explanation of the progression from Aries 1 to Pisces 30 is, I feel, a work of genius. For a student of esoteric wisdom, there is almost nothing one can find (except perhaps certain writings on Kabbalah) that is such a convincingly clear exposition of the spiritual journey of an individual.
His system is not claimed to be so very original, borrowing heavily from Jones, and classical wisdom teachings of the East. However it is very straightforward, very well presented and pleasingly well-reasoned. You can study all of it fully though his splendid website, Mindfire. On this page, I have put in my own words a shorter summary of what he taught.
According to Dane Rudhyar, and entirely in alignment with Marc Edmund Jones, we can study the 360 degrees of the zodiac using the division of the circle into parts to show the journey any individual takes on the path of self-realisation.
The soul needs to express itself fully as a unique individual, firstly by differentiating itself and then finding stability, before it can return to identifying itself as part of all and everything through fully integrating itself within its group of fellow humans and then capitalizing upon the synergy of the group consciousness of the species.
At this level of attainment, the student has realised that we each need to master all of the 360 degrees, notwithstanding the planetary positions in our individual horoscopes.
It would be foolish to imagine that our path from emergence to full realisation progresses in a linear way, one step followed by the next until 360 degrees have been walked. That's not how energy flows, generally speaking it moves in spirals and has eddies and whirls like air and water. Imagine better that the whole process is a series of cycles within cycles.
The biggest overarching vibration that takes 360 degrees is OUT and BACK, each having two aspects - of acceleration and deceleration. Let's say 1) Fast out 2) Slowing down to turn 3) Fast back 4) Slowing down to turn. Thus we get:
1: Aries Taurus Gemini
II: Cancer Leo Virgo
III: Libra Scorpio Sagittarius
IV: Capricorn Aquarius Pisces
Each has its own inner dance of push and pull, for example the push of desire and the pull of potency for Aries. Each of them requires three levels of expression: do, feel, think. Within these are 5 stages: affirm, contrast, reconcile, realise, progress.
First Hemicycle: The Process of Individualization
Act 1: Differentiation Aries Taurus Gemini
Act II: Stabilization Cancer Leo Virgo
Second Hemicycle: The Process of Collectivization
Act III: Group-Integration Libra Scorpio Sagittarius
Act IV: Capitalization Capricorn Aquarius Pisces
Three levels repeat, each in 5 stages to give a 15 degree pattern so that each sign has two ‘scenes’. For example, Aries 27 would be the 2nd stage of the third level (mental) of the second scene (which is called Potency).
FIRST LEVEL: ACTIONAL
SECOND LEVEL: EMOTIONAL/CULTURAL
THIRD LEVEL: INDIVIDUAL/MENTAL
This implies that the first stage of developing new awareness is action, and that is followed by a response of the level of feeling emotions that are substantively to do with cultural expectations, and therefore conditioning. Finally we try to grasp what is happening on a more intellectual or philosophical level, and it is only when we have determined our own understanding that we truly express individuality.

The soul is drawn to further its development by the most essential force in existence, which is desire. Desire itself is powerless – we see that unless it is met by potency it is impotent. The journey involves bringing substance to thought; the Earth plane substantiates ideas and confirms their authenticity and reasonableness. Natural curiosity motivates discovery and it is our normal attitude of being to exteriorise our findings. It becomes clear that more options are available to us than we can experience, so decision is required, especially who and what to live with and care for – and the consolidation of this decision writes the script of our lives. These are the ingredients yet they need to be ‘cooked’ in the cauldron of our experiences, it is this combustion that allows the release of a fuller, previously hidden, statement of self. Details emerge that characterise the uniqueness of how we are different from others, and our education, in the widest sense, is the training ground for this shaping process.
Our intimate interactions change who we are, a transfiguration followed by a reconstruction as we learn new understandings and make new directional choices based both on a deeper communion with higher forces and its corresponding strengthening of faith. We gain the knowledge of what our experience mean to us by a process of abstraction and transference – in other words we make up a working model of reality and project it onto others to see if it works. In time we come to crystallise our wisdom and take on a role to perform a service for the group we belong to, raising our contribution to humanity by perfecting our excellent management of all aspects of being an ideal human being. We come to know that all beings are collectively part of a federation, that separation is a false reading of life and that the perpetuation of consciousness requires us to surrender selfhood.
