Sabian Symbols

Based on the spiritual guidance for awakening astrologers, Sabian Symbols are found within the original works of Elsie Wheeler, Marc Edmund Jones and Dane Rudhyar.

Sabian Symbols are mysterious images that describe each of 360 degrees of the zodiac. They provide a deep and subtle understanding of life's lessons and the necessary material for self-revelation.

What are Sabian Symbols?

Sabian Symbols are images or metaphors, clairvoyantly derived by Elsie Wheeler in 1925, which were interpreted by Marc Edmund Jones to trigger his understanding of each one of the 360 degrees of the zodiac separately, and also by Dane Rudhyar to create a schematic that outlines the journey towards self-realisation.

Each of the 360 symbols and explanations can be seen as a life mystery. Each of us will have our own personal take on it, and this can be as valid as any attempt the author makes to give objective meaning. It all depends on how capable you are at opening the subtle, intuitive aspect of mind to unveil the mystery.

Elsie Wheeler (1887 –1938)

As the spiritualist medium who derived the images, the Sabian Symbol for her Neptune position is rather apt:

A glass bottomed boat in still water (Gemini 1)
The unconscious mind holds as many secrets as the ocean depths, which can be revealed to one who enquires

Yet her Pisces moon seems more telling - she was intuitively receptive to the Great Mystery - that described by:

The Great Stone Face (Pisces 30)
There is no right answer to, or best version of, anything - we make it all up according to how we feel or think we should

Marc Edmund Jones (1888 –1980)

Jones was a tireless practitioner, lecturer, and teacher, an exemplar around the world of living astrology for nearly seventy years. He was a philosopher of astrology, an occult astrologer who, in addition to Sabian Symbols, brought many innovative techniques and esoteric methods.

His Sun position describes his life work well, and speaks to the Sabian lineage that goes back 12000 years:

Dane Rudhyar (1895 –1985)

Regarded with Jung as a key figure in developing a more psychologically sophisticated approach to astrology, he was a classical musician, composer, artist, theosophist and philosopher. He had truly exceptional insights into Astrology and the way the Sabian Symbols can be used to outline the path to personal realisation. There's a lot more information on a separate page:

Rudhyar's Genius

Arthur Middleton Young (1905 - 1995)

Also worth a mention - Arthur Young was an astrologer and inventor, and an ardent supporter of Sabian Symbols in the early days, who arranged the finances and other things so that Marc Jones could publish his book and with Rudhyar, they could continue their studies into Sabian Symbols. He founded the "Institute for the Study of Consciousness" in 1952 in Berkeley, Ca.

Ruby Fumizki

Japanese artist Ruby Fumizki created the series of 360 images, one for each of the Sabian Symbol degrees, which are featured widely on this website; she is currently working on Sabian Symbols animations. Perhaps even more importantly, she created the Sabian Symbols Calculator, which has significantly increased the numbers of those who can access their own symbols and study these mysteries.

The Sabian People

There was a tribe of people called the Sabians, which was referenced three times in the Holy Koran. In other words they were real, historical people. Not much of what they were, or did, is recorded, and much ambiguity exists about them. However, it seems clear that they pre-dated Abraham, and therefore the period of accepted organised religion...and were thought to have been pagan, in other words worshippers of the spirit within Nature.
