A woman rises out of water, a seal rises and embraces her
This universal idea is best expressed through planets in
Aries 1 (0°- 1°)RECOGNITION OF POTENTIAL
Emergence out of the realm of potentiality into the realm of reality "Becoming the essence-seed of your soul's incarnation" Everything that ever comes to pass has had its first beginnings in the realm of potentiality, the ghost of an idea not formed, neither expressed nor explicit yet, in seed form, containing the unconscious potential for mature realisation.
The vast majority of seeds are not germinated and so fail to realise their potential. In the beginning, to become an individual, we need to emerge from the sea of the collective unconsciousness – to 'leave the womb'. First the desire is simply to be, because it is still far from certain whether survival itself can be attained. Rudhyar: A WOMAN JUST RISEN FROM THE SEA, A SEAL IS EMBRACING HER |

Knowledge of polarity awakens the power to create something out of nothing
The seal is a metaphor for the phallic principle, and the woman rising from the depths symbolises emergence from the pre-Existence ‘waters of infinite potential’. Out of that mystical nothingness something arises, drawn by a receptive potential. Separation is born, and it requires ‘this’ to be different from ‘that’; the polarity of feminine and masculine is thus created. Also Awareness is awakened, and expands. Duality implies relationship between things. One is more rational and pushy, the other more emotional and responsive, and their relationship is sex in its essential form. The potentiality of space to give way has an awakening effect upon spirit to enter and express itself. Spirit naturally expands to enter wherever its desire-nature will be accommodated and be met by a willing response. The Instinctual MindIt is important to understand that the instinctual mind is an untrustworthy organ of deeper understanding. Yet when we are moved by the heart, such activation can be reckless, assertive, courageous and purposeful and will nonetheless realise only harmony and joy. From this we see that the heart must be engaged if our values are to be expressed sincerely rather than as empty, intellectual concepts.
What was dormant potential at the beginning is now vibrant – with interdependent emotion and purpose interacting together; these interactions generate vibration, life itself, in which things perpetually change. There are constant separations and re-formations, and the realisation dawns that, with initiative and responsiveness, anyone can take advantage of every moment. FocusFocusing this turbulent life force is the awesome task of a mighty will, operating through a clear mind with a precise vision, to produce a laser beam of intent. This power of will shapes uncommitted energy into the exact form that reflects its vision: what you 'see' is what you get, and seeing is active not passive.
If we lose concentration, the result is clouded and requires the corrective processes of refinement. This is feedback, which can teach humility and help develop awareness of our interpretations; also it binds us into considerate relationship, so that character can be smoothed out. If we get self-obsessed then we fail, because we forfeit the ability to recognise more obscure aspects of the infinite potential within any situation. Another new beginning is always guaranteed, despite errors and pains. Restating original blessing is evidence of faith, innocence and purity. Hope is eternal, and faith is a birth-right. |
A woman rises out of the water, a seal rises and embraces her
Commentary by ShaRyn Maathhews
The water, our unconscious. What is yet to form. The creativity of woman rising, taking form from the nothing. The joyful and playful seal rising to meet her, to witness her existence. Together the yin and the yang. The joining in an embrace of our human self and our animal self. Is this what allows the manifestation of humanity, are we seeing the first separation of body, soul and spirit, only so they can engage again in the expression of themselves? Manifestation from the waters of pure potential. Starting with the seal, which represents playfulness, not just occasionally, all the time. In work, in rest and in play. Can you see a seal and not smile? Even writing of it I’m smiling. They can live equally well on land or in water, and to the depths of water too, and yet they choose to bear their young on land. I’m reminded of the old Selkie tales where the seal can become human by removing their skin. Shedding the layers of protection and blubber, becoming vulnerable to the elements, all in order to expand deepen the experience of life. And then the woman, representing creativity, bringing something out of nothing, even rising herself out of the nothing. These two coming together in an embrace. Giving us an inclining of the art of manifestation. Rising or the taking of action. Being vulnerable enough to desire expansion of our experience. Embracing JOY as we do so. Finally, the water, remembering that we coming forth from Pisces that although this is the first degree of the zodiac, it is just a point in the continuum, the circle of life. The spark of pure potential. Then bringing all this together, are we witnessing the first manifestation from the field of pure potential Commentary by howly owl
My moon is 1 degree of Aries. Lost in a need for validation absolutely! I feel a baby emotionally as they overwhelm the body (due to past shame and repression) yet can clearly recognise what has happened after as if I were somewhat evolved in this arena...the seal imagery gets me with this one. I saw some whilst travelling last summer. They are an amalgamation of elements; fishy fluid watery wisdom, puppy-like behaviour, with leonine whiskered faces...clumsy yet elegant. Unpretentious, innocent and yet swift and skilful...your selected image makes me feel I am her, pregnant with this initiating impulse. Commentary by Paul Michael Howard
This is literally the New Year’s Day of the zodiac. A beginning, or a beginning again, or a carrying forward into a new chapter with all the lessons, talents, experiences, and wisdom that have gone before. At the leading cusp of this degree, the yang and yin trends, or day and night forces quite literally, are in perfect equilibrium, even as we transition in this degree from the dominance of the night-force to the day-force. The ocean is the realm of pure undifferentiated potentiality, the vast infinite sea of unmanifested ideas. The woman rising out of the ocean represents the emergence of a consciousness, a subject capable of beholding an object. The seal that emerges after her is also a subject beholding her as the other, as it embraces her. Animal intelligence is saying “I am still with you, and I am still a part of you. My creaturehood is still a part of you, even as you are a creator in your own right. Commentary by Ana Neves
The first encounter of female and male principle occurs, and the spark of creation takes place. The fiery tone of this encounter makes it impossible not to recognise the existence of duality, and its expression within ourselves. Whenever we fight another, or when we fall in love, we honour the process of continuous revolution around male and female archetypes, that which generates the energy of creating. Perhaps we should honour all these encounters, no matter how challenging – because it is encounter that brings us to experience the most honourable principle of them all – Life itself. |
