RUTHLESSNESS OF NATURE
However spiritual and compassionate we are, we have to face the cruel imperative that something has to die that we may live
The social aspect of stabilising our identity of course has to do with interaction between all the various aspects of being alive. At its most basic level, one group feeds another to create a food chain - so we give life and nurture to certain plants and domesticated animals so that we can later eat them. Very often in life we serve and are served, and then are served up; on some level we are all eating and eaten.

By carefully feathering our own nest, we help build community
As we pursue our own goals we actually fulfil the expectations of others; so by feathering our own nest we participate fully and legitimately in the balanced, dynamic order of community life. This is because individual and community are related and interactive components of each other.
There are innumerable choices to make – people to befriend, tasks to perform, places to go, and ideas to discuss – and these each have their own detailed characteristics to consider. A nest thrown together in a slapdash way does not serve its purpose, and similarly it takes perpetual meticulousness to build an optimal set of life circumstances.
Knitting together the constituent aspects of life is our creative purpose and joy; individuality flourishes only when it is able to establish its personal rights over some desirable segment of reality. The enthusiasm this expresses and generates is a powerful, dependable and unimpeachable motivation for each one of us.
Our initiatives are preserved to the extent that we are able to utilize the natural flow of life around us. What surrounds us, which together defines and describes our group, is the sum of all individual initiatives. We need to be resourceful, building upon whatever is available and shaping things according to our own desire and will.
By this, we participate consciously in a group destiny; we even derive our sense of life satisfaction from such involvements. We justify our very existence within the context of our immediate, current circumstances.
We seek to reconcile who we are with the expectations of our community, and what we ourselves claim within the context of available shared resources. It is this reconciliation that demands our meticulous attention. If we take too much or too little then our position within the community is non-optimal for all concerned. We must find a way carefully and considerately to balance our claims and our inputs with others’, and rebalance them again and again in each new situation.
Our need is supported, our greed is not. We may have concerns over everyday security – many people fear lack – but if we can let go of these fears then the unlimited spirit of humankind can be released so that freedom and abundance can be enjoyed fully and enthusiastically by everyone.
