In order to achieve our potential we need to awaken into honest self-realization
The image of this immoral biblical character warns us of the challenge to steer clear of a tendency to resort to a carefree dissolute attitude – seeking passing pleasure instead of lasting joy – as a distorted compensation for feeling the lack of any real meaning in life. Nonetheless, whatever our background and current circumstances, we are fundamentally an aspect of goodness and truth. We may lose direction and get totally caught up in the ardent pursuit of fame and fortune, or the complacency of accepting the mediocre status quo, seeking for example the pleasure of drugs and alcohol to compensate – yet we will quickly reassert our primary spiritual qualities when confronted with a profound crisis. We can so easily forget this important and extraordinary fact of existence – this coherence of our own essential divinity. It is this fact that creates in us an instinct for higher things. Through it we attract opportunities to open up our sense of what life really is all about at the level of sacredness, and what goodness we can offer. The inclination to serve and be kind, to give freely of ourselves to strangers, is evidence of our irrefutable spiritual nature. When motivated by the hope of honest self-realization, we are actually capable of plumbing the taboo depths of life to the utmost reaches of our authentic being. We may be shunned by society for what is considered prohibited behaviour. However, perhaps because of her sincerity of self, Jesus made himself known to her – she was blessed by spirit and so validated – and subsequently became celebrated throughout history. Successful realization of specific goalsIn order to find entirely gratifying fulfilments, our strength of will is expressed by our indomitable striving for successful realization of specific goals, whatever the price. Unless we awaken and express all of our abilities, actual and potential, we can lose heart. Yet if we do awaken to them, then we are blessed by spirit.
Typically we all concern ourselves only with our own business and that of the family, yet is it not beyond us, as developed beings, to surrender our own pursuits whenever it seems more appropriate to serve another’s needs. At this level of awareness we come to see that in a subtle way everyone’s business is our business; thus we serve ourselves as we serve others. We can even reach levels of insight where our trust and our love of adventure are so strong that we can easily and happily submit to any situation that life presents us, knowing that it will serve us benevolently – whatever the outcome. This is awakening, when we find that degree of faith that we know all is well and, whatever occurs, will always be well. |
